Happy Holidays everyone, I’ve flown to see my family and thus wanted to do a short airplane movie post. I used to do these on Facebook every holiday, basically I never sleep on planes, I just watch movies and play games the whole way. When my family lived in Dubai that meant 6-8 movies per flight, now they live in England, so 2-4. I only watched 2, blame Pokémon for being distracting.
One note before I begin, a fun game to play in airports is with the HSBC ads along the corridor things to the plane: try to find a slogan that doesn’t work for their money laundering/the drug trade. They all fit, it’s sort of magical.
War Dogs:
Jonah Hill does another movie like Wolf of Wall street to prove he can be a serious actor, and he is sort of good at it. His characters are always sorta sleazy, and still slightly comedic relief, but he does scumbag well. Anyway it’s about two guys who sell guns to the US military, apparently based on a true story (I did no research, the movie just said so) and they get in some shit for it. It’s got its good moments, like their Jordanian driver screaming “Fallujah bad! Fallujah bad!” while being chased by insurgent pickup trucks, and nothing too bad either, though I have a lot of trouble telling how much was embellished from real life, because frankly the whole thing is a bit surreal. The main character says so himself, in 6 months he went from massage therapist to gun runner, its weird.
Overall worth a watch, but not something I regret not seeing in theaters.
The Secret Life of Pets:
Cute movie, I remember being very excited by the trailer, and then missing the release entirely. Its reverse Chicken Run basically; house pets are released into the streets of New York, hate that, and want/try to return to their owner. Along the way they meet a collection of colourful characters, but by the end tiny white dog steals the show. That’s about it, worth watching on a plane.
Bonus: Replaying Twilight Princess:
9 Years ago I got Twilight Princess and I loved it, I played all the way through to right outside Ganon’s door. I then decided to take a break before fighting the final boss, and never went back (see above photo). Anyway my impressions:
Me in the beginning: damn this game has not visually aged well
20 minutes in: ha I’m a dog
2 hours in: I’m so happy to have my horse back, yaaay!
3 hours in: I had forgotten old man goron nipples were a thing
I’m looking to beat it before I leave the UK (so 3 more days), last time it took me 40 hours to get to Ganon.
And that’s all , in a few days ill be flying back and ill do another few plane movies, plus a book I got for Christmas, it’s a collection of John Scalzi’s (my favourite author) blog “Whatever”, and I also hope to finish that by the time I’m back.
I’m full, with family, and happy, and I wish the same for all of you,
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays,
Peter
